Fee increase October 2, 2020

On August 3, 2020, USCIS published a final rule that will change filing fees effective October 2, 2020.

The most drastic increase will be in the cost of the N-400 Application for Naturalization, which will rise from $725 (with biometrics) to $1,170.

The I-485 Application for Adjustment of Status (permanent residence) will also be significantly affected. The fee for the form will actually drop from $1,225 (with biometrics) to $1,130. However, the applications for employment authorization (I-765) and advance parole (permission to travel) (I-131) will no longer be covered under the I-485 fee. They will need to paid separately at $550 and $590, respectively, including on renewal. For most people, then, this means a fee increase of from $1,225 to $2,270, or even more if the I-485 is pending for more than a year.

One other significant change is that the timeframe for premium processing will be extended from 15 calendar days to 15 business days.
